Geotagging plug-in shows maturing Lightroom
"Frieldl's Lightroom geotagging plug-in reads a GPS unit's track log, then deduces a photo's location based on the time it was taken. Although that's the same basic mechanism many other geotagging programs employ, Friedl's plug-in brings some welcome flexibility to the process by moving the process within Lightroom. "

Third Eye Camera
"4"×5" camera made from Aluminium, Titanium, Brass, Silver, Gem Stones and a 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl. Light and time enters at the third eye, exposing the film in the middle of the skull." Takes creepy photos!

BorrowLenses.com
Rent all sorts of (Canon and Nikon) lenses and bodies and accessories for very reasonable prices, nationwide! Finally I can test out that tilt-shift or macro lens without paying the cost. ($1500-ish for a TS, I think!) More renting options from James Duncan Davidson here.

Photographers stand up for your rights in LA, June 1
"One June 1, photographers throughout Los Angeles will gather at the Hollywood and Highland Metro Station to peacefully protest against the unnecessary treatment they have received from security guards..., LAPD, and LASD while photographing in public places, and on the Metro." As seen on TV. I'd do it if I were going to be in town!

Digital Tampering in the Media, Politics and Law
"Photography lost its innocence many years ago. In as early as the 1930s, shortly after the first commercially available camera was introduced, Stalin had his enemies "air-brushed" out of photographs. With the advent of high-resolution digital cameras, powerful personal computers and sophisticated photo-editing software, the manipulation of digital images is becoming more common" Examples of said manipulation, dating back to the 1860s.

Why You Should Ditch That Zoom for a Classic 50mm "Normal" Lens
Not only for the reasons he says, but also because most "kit" lenses (like those I have) are, frankly, crap. I'd much rather have a few quality, reasonably fast prime lenses at the lengths I use, rather than mediocre zooms that cover a bunch of lengths I don't use plus 2-3 I do. The problem is, it's hard to find nice used lenses except online... and who wants to buy a piece of glass sight unseen?

Gorgeous high-ISO photos from Nikon D3
Looks like very mild grain at 3200, maybe not particularly noticeable until they hit 6000... Makes me bitter that my entry-level Canon only goes up to 1600! I'm excited to see this kind of technology hit bodies I can afford for the next generation

Twelve Essential Photographic Rules

Have Your Camera Add Copyright to Every Photo
"It's important to have your copyright information included with every photo that goes out into the wild... You can have your camera do it for you." ("While the copyright notice is no longer needed to protect your photos, it's a good idea since it can lead to additional damages pursuant to the DMCA.")

Watermarks Can Be Music To Your Ears
When somebody uses your works without permission, if you've registered those works with the copyright office you can get "statutory damages" -- up to $25,000 per use, in addition to the actual damages caused to you by the use. But registering costs money. Turns out that, just by putting a watermark on your photo, you can get a similar level of protection. Given the regular use of photos from this site and my smugmug site by people who aren't me, maybe I should consider adding watermarks!

Improve your photography with classical art.
"The Old Masters of painting spent years of their lives learning about color. Why let all their effort go to waste on the walls of some museum when it could be used to give you a hand with color correction?"

Printable PDF documents to make your own lens hoods
"A brand new replacement lens hood for the Canon EF 600mm f/4 L USM IS costs a whopping £439.99. Alternatively, you can download it from this site for free! Granted, the genuine item is likely to be a bit sturdier, but that's still £439.99 you're saving!"

Lensbaby
I've wanted one of these for months, ever since seeing a brochure, but the photos on Blurbomat just increase my overall level of droolage. (I should qualify my consumer lust here with the statement that I'm not really shooting enough lately to deserve one.)

SmugMug's extreme makeover
Nice new AJAX-y interface at SmugMug. Makes it much faster and easier to browse my photos, which I like. Some of the features are a little hidden, tho (mouse over an image to see them... need an icon!)
